On August 21st, the official website of the State Administration for Market Regulation released more than ten automobile recall notices, and more than ten car companies including Tesla, Xiaomi, Lynk&Co, Xiaopeng Motors, Chery, Dongfeng, BAIC, and FAW simultaneously launched recalls, involving a total of over 4 million vehicles.
The hidden dangers of this large-scale recall are highly similar: the emergency mechanical handle inside the car has a similar color tone to the interior, low recognition, and is not easy to operate quickly. Once a serious collision occurs, causing the low-voltage system of the entire vehicle to fail, the unlocking of the electronic control doors will directly fail, and the emergency handle hidden in the dark will be difficult to find. The passengers inside the car cannot quickly open the door to escape, and external rescue is also difficult to carry out.
This round of collective recall is essentially a large-scale remedy for the design defects of fully concealed door handles. On this day, it also became a rare single day recall event in the history of China's automotive industry.
And behind this, it declares the end of the era of fully concealed door handles. On January 28, 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially issued the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Requirements for Car Door Handle" (GB 48001-2026), which clarifies that from January 1, 2027, new cars are prohibited from using fully concealed door handle designs.
The design, which was once seen as a symbol of technology and the future, has now withdrawn from the new car stage.
##From trendy standard to controversy ridden
The popularity of fully concealed door handles began with the first Tesla Model S in 2012. This model is equipped with automatic pop-up hidden door handles, paired with a 17 inch central control screen, and motor-driven instead of traditional mechanical cables. The door handles are fully integrated into the body's curved surface, earning a "futuristic" rating at the time.
Subsequently, domestic new energy vehicle companies quickly followed suit, with NIO, Xiaopeng, Ideal, and Xiaomi following suit one after another. The fully hidden door handles have almost become a signature feature of the technological feel of new energy vehicle models.
Car companies pursue this design mainly for two reasons.
The first is the visual appearance. Removing the protruding handles makes the side lines of the car cleaner and smoother, enhancing the visual sense of luxury. In the consumer market where appearance is prioritized, it has become a selling point that attracts users to the product.
The second is to optimize wind resistance. In theory, eliminating protruding parts can reduce the drag coefficient and indirectly improve the endurance. However, actual test data shows that the improvement of car wind resistance by hiding door handles is only 0.005-0.01Cd, and the optimization amplitude is negligible.
For this insignificant parameter improvement, we have to sacrifice usability and security redundancy. But this flashy but impractical configuration quickly became a standard feature for many new cars.
The pain points that come with it are endless. Many ordinary consumers are not familiar with its operating logic. Some car owners have shared that their elders face hidden door handles and repeatedly check around the vehicle, but still do not know how to open the door and need repeated teaching. In the low temperature environment of winter in the north, after washing the car, the handle freezes and gets stuck, making it impossible to pop out. Car owners can only use hot water to thaw it before opening the door. Even in the scenario of ride hailing, many passengers are at a loss when facing such doors, causing travel delays and communication conflicts.
These are just daily troubles, what is truly fatal is the survival crisis in accident scenarios.
##The hidden dangers of life and death behind glamorous design
Multiple accident rescue cases have become a turning point in the fate of hidden door handles.
A major traffic accident judicial appraisal report in 2025 stated that the collision and compression caused a short circuit in the power battery cells, interfered with the low-voltage circuit of the entire vehicle, triggered the vehicle's power-off protection, and rendered the release function of the door handle ineffective. External rescue personnel cannot find the mechanical force point, and the car door cannot be opened according to CCTV News .
This is not an isolated case. According to collision test data from China Insurance Research Institute, the probability of the handle successfully popping out after a side collision is only 67% for pure electronic control hidden door handle models; The success rate of opening traditional exposed mechanical door handles can reach 98%.
Ke Shanjun, Director of the Department of Industrial Design at the School of Vehicle Engineering, Chongqing University of Technology, explained that electronic door handles rely on low-voltage power supply from the entire vehicle. After a collision triggers a power outage protection, the entire mechanism directly fails. Even if the traditional door handle is locked, there is still a point of force for prying; After the failure of the hidden handle, the surface of the car body is smooth, and there is no place to apply force for rescue.
In the context of marketing, technological configuration becomes a risk point that hinders escape in the event of an accident.
The drawbacks have already been identified within the industry. During the national standard opinion collection stage in May 2026, some senior executives of car companies bluntly stated that it was too late for the standard to be introduced. Wei Jianjun, Chairman of Great Wall Motors, has also publicly stated that fully concealed door handles are pseudo technology that rely on electric drive. Once they malfunction, the car doors cannot be opened.
One real accident after another, pushing regulatory authorities to set red lines. After the new regulations are implemented on January 1, 2027, newly launched models will completely bid farewell to fully concealed door handles. The recall of millions of vehicles on August 21st is only the beginning of the rectification of the existing market, and it is also a microcosm of the era of "design for design".
Compromise safety for optimizing wind resistance of 0.005Cd; For marketing purposes, users are required to relearn how to open doors; Replace the mechanical structure that has been proven to be mature and reliable for a hundred years with a cool appearance. This approach cannot be considered a true technological innovation, but rather a product that is detached from reality and self interested.
The exit of fully concealed door handles is a highly iconic industry event. It means that the Chinese automotive industry is shifting from pursuing conceptual innovation to pragmatic innovation centered on safety and practicality.
Next year's new regulations will come into effect, and what will disappear is not just a set of door handles, but also the need to abandon the product thinking of "emphasizing gimmicks over essence".
Looking at the industry, there are also many internet celebrities whose designs are worth re examining: large screens completely replace physical buttons, panoramic sunroofs without sunshade structures, and steering wheel touch buttons replace physical paddles, all of which are using technological storytelling to compromise some performance. In addition, industry issues such as "crash cars" also urgently need to be addressed.
What we have abandoned is only a beautiful but impractical design; In exchange, it is the most fundamental reverence for life safety in automotive products.
