Chen Qingtai: In 2030, software may account for 60% of the vehicle cost

On December 16, at the Global Intelligent Automobile Industry Summit (GIV2022), Chen Qingtai, Chairman of the China Electric Vehicle Hundred People's Association, delivered a speech on the topic of automobile intelligence. He pointed out that the subversion of the future automobile to the traditional automobile will make more than 50% of the traditional parts system face reconstruction. Electrification, greening, intelligence, networking and sharing will eventually realize the collaborative integration of intelligent automobile, intelligent energy, intelligent transportation and smart city. This is the direction of efforts in the next step and the focus of competition in the next step.

In this regard, he gave three suggestions. First, automobile intellectualization is a very complex system project, and automobile enterprises must plan how to promote the development of intelligent vehicles from a systematic perspective. Second, the value chain and supply chain of smart cars are being restructured at an accelerated pace. It is necessary to solve the neck problems such as lack of core and soul. Third, the development of intelligent vehicles requires a good top-level design. A data supervision system for intelligent vehicles should be established to encourage technological innovation and business type innovation while ensuring data security.

Since 2011, China has taken the lead in introducing the industrialization of new energy vehicles in the world, realizing the priority of lane changing. During this period, we chose the right technical route, the government's promotion policies were reasonable and appropriate, and the rapid transformation of enterprises enabled us to achieve a series of technological breakthroughs and scale of new energy vehicles, which ultimately won the high recognition of the world's major automobile producing countries and major automobile companies, thus promoting a magnificent global automobile revolution. Electrification is just the prelude to this automobile revolution. At present, the problems that people worry about, such as difficult charging, short endurance and insecurity, are gradually becoming a thing of the past. What benefits residents and deeply changes the economy and society is the electrification, greening, intelligence, networking and sharing of cars, and ultimately the collaborative integration of smart cars, smart energy, smart transportation and smart cities. This is the direction of efforts in the next step and the focus of competition in the next step.

Next, I would like to discuss with you some ideas on the development of automotive intelligence.

First, automobile intelligence is a very complex system engineering. In fact, this automobile revolution is not carried out in isolation. It is paralleled and connected by the new energy revolution and the new generation of mobile communications, and it is a transportation revolution and smart city. What supports this automobile revolution is the mobile Internet, which is the rapid progress of digital economy and artificial intelligence technology. These factors interact with the automobile revolution, providing a technical basis and rich use scenarios for the electrification, greening, networking, intelligence and sharing of future automobiles. At this stage, it is impossible to advance alone. It requires the collaborative innovation of smart cars, intelligent transportation and smart cities to successfully build a complex technology and industrial system. Therefore, we must plan how to promote the development of intelligent vehicles from the perspective of systems.

Second, the value chain and supply chain of smart cars are being restructured at an accelerated pace. China is still facing the problem of "choking the neck" in some links. I think this is both a challenge and an opportunity. Fortunately, in the process of entering the new stage of intelligence and networking in China, more and more high-tech companies actively join in, making the technology content of cars more and more high and the service software more and more rich. Compared with traditional cars, its attributes, definitions, internal cores and boundaries have changed. It is being transformed from a typical mechanical product into power electronic products, Internet products, and electronic information high-tech products based on mechanical products. It is a mobile machine from A to B, and more importantly, it is a mobile intelligent terminal with data determining experience and software defining products.

The subversion of the future automobile to the traditional automobile makes more than 50% of the traditional parts system face reconstruction. The new species of the future automobile makes the concept and category of automobile parts change greatly. From batteries, motors, electronic controls, power semiconductors of new energy vehicles, to chips, software systems, computing platforms, video sensors, laser radars, controllers, actuators involved in intelligence and networking, to on-board control systems, high-definition maps, Internet communications, cloud control platforms, AI algorithms and other software and hardware have become an important part of the automobile chain. Some institutions predict that by 2030, chips will account for more than 20% of the cost of high-end automotive materials, a five fold increase from 4% in 2019. In 2030, the software cost will account for 60% of the vehicle cost from 15% today.

Automobile chips and software systems have always been the weak links in China, and they still face a big "choke" problem. In recent years, due to the lack of core, China's automobile chip design has made rapid progress. I hope that this momentum will continue until the shackles of "neck" are removed. The prospect is promising.

Third, the development of intelligent vehicles requires a good top-level design. We must put the future cars in a larger category, and promote the development of new energy vehicles with a broader vision, more forward-looking planning, and more systematic top-level design, so that we can stabilize the direction and move forward steadily. Therefore, it is necessary to mobilize various forces to jointly do a good job in the top-level layout of ICVs, such as how to intelligentize the road infrastructure according to the idea of vehicle road coordination, and dynamically adjust the intelligent technology sector undertaken by each vehicle road. How to establish a data supervision system for intelligent vehicles, while ensuring data security, encourage technological innovation and business type innovation, such as breaking the division of departments and forming an efficient and collaborative promotion system, is also a very urgent task at present.

We have made great progress in automobile electrification, and the prospect of moving from a big automobile country to a powerful automobile country has been shown. The technologies and industries involved in networking and intellectualization are just the fields with good development in China in recent years. The success of the first half provided us with experience to win the second half, which made us more confident. The intelligent second half will face more challenges. I think we can succeed, but we can only succeed, not fail.
